Mandy Schendel, Miss Washington 2012
Is it all Glitz and Glamour? What happens when the limelight dims and life gets back to normal? Do you know how to handle setbacks and stumbles? Survive a good friend’s betrayal? Be humble and grateful?
From Disney World disasters to unfair treatment by the media, author Mandy Schendel tells how to overcome any obstacle, handle controversy, and rise above any situation with grace. In this rare behind-the-scenes look at her many accomplishments, Mandy shares her story of struggle and success, and offers advice to those who may be at a crossroads.
|
Recalling the highs and lows of her life so far, Mandy illustrates how her competitive spirit, drive, and heart of a servant have guided her from a very young age. At age 11, she encouraged fellow-youngsters to “Do Something” and formed her own nonprofit organization called The Difference Maker Organization.
As she pursued leadership positions in high school, she discovered that her image as a pageant contestant became a stigma and that it took hard work and determination to convince others―and herself―that she deserved success. The same experience followed her to Disney World where she had to endure extreme challenges in order to succeed.
Now, having fulfilled a lifelong dream to represent her state in the Miss America pageant (where she was a Top 10 Finalist, winner of the Preliminary Swimsuit Competition, and a Finalist for the Quality of Life Award), Mandy shares her story in this motivational book for teenagers―girls and boys―hoping to guide them on the path towards effective leadership. Her 22 steps to climb the ladder of achievement and self-worth include Making Good Choices, How to Turn a No into a Yes, Enjoying the Journey, Find the Right Circle of Influences, Become Indispensable, Celebrating You, and Giving Back.
Whatever you do, implores Mandy, DO SOMETHING! Don’t waste a minute of your precious life allowing anyone to tell you “you can’t.”
